Oral Pathology is a dental specialization for diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders pertaining to the mouth, oral cavity, and jaw. Some of the oral diseases and disorders include:

  • Oral cancer
  • Mouth Ulcers

Reasons for Oral Pathology

Many signs of oral diseases or disorders can be identified at home via self-examination. Any experience with hoarseness, difficulty chewing or swallowing, sore throat, excessive bleeding, or any other abnormality can be a sign you need to see an oral pathologist. When you are at home, check for the following symptoms:

  • Abnormal growth and/or cysts
  • Inflamed or bleeding gums
  • Red or white patches or lumps on gums or inside mouth
  • Open lesions that will not heal
  • Visible changes in color to lips, gums, tongue, palate, cheeks, face, or neck

During your appointment with an oral pathologist, we will first examine your mouth and maxillofacial region by sight and with a variety of clinical diagnosis techniques such as microscopic viewing, radiography, or biochemical analysis. In certain cases, the doctor may take a biopsy to be analyzed at the lab.
