Some Problems With Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are typically the last teeth to come in. Because they appear later than other teeth, wisdom teeth are often crowded and do not grow in properly. Because of this, the teeth can become impacted (unable to fully break through the gum tissues and jawbone), or a wisdom tooth can grow in at an incorrect angle. Wisdom teeth that do not erupt as they can lead to dental problems, such as:

  • Disturbing the natural tooth alignment or orthodontic treatment
  • Damage to the neighboring teeth
  • Tooth decay
  • Infection and inflammation in the gums and other tissues
  • The formation of cysts
  • Damage to the jawbone

michelleDr. Michelle Kennedy Maak’s practice is focused on oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS), with specific surgical expertise in complex tooth extraction, including wisdom teeth and cosmetic facial interventions. Dr. Maak is a Utah native, and she obtained her undergraduate degree from Carroll College in Montana. She continued her dental school training at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio. Her specialty training in oral and maxillofacial surgery took place at Brookdale University Hospital and Jacobi Medical Center in New York, where she stayed as an Assistant Professor and Assistant Director of the OMFS residency program. She also served as a Surgical Attending for 3 years at the Brookdale University Level 1 trauma center. Although Dr. Maak enjoyed her teaching position and the complexity of the oral surgeries she performed in New York, she ultimately desired to pursue her interest in cosmetic and facial surgery, and return to her home state of Utah. For this reason, she returned to Utah to obtain

fellowship specialty training at the Institute of Facial and Cosmetic Surgery. She continues to remain interested in education and in advancing her knowledge to improve the care of her patients. To this end, she has published academically in the prestigious Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Maak’s diverse experience and training have provided her with a unique ability to deliver specialty care in a variety of oral and facial treatments, including complex tooth extractions, wisdom teeth, cosmetic deformities, and facial cosmetics such as Botox and Restalin, among others. She is certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Additionally, she currently serves as a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Maak is proud to join Aspire Surgical. She is extremely happy to back home in Utah. She loves fly-fishing, hiking, skiing, and spending time with her family.

Wisdom Tooth Removal Experience

The process to remove wisdom teeth begins with a consultation with one of our surgeons. During the consultation, we will determine if a wisdom tooth removal procedure is appropriate; this usually means the tooth is impacted or coming in incorrectly. If we determine that oral surgery to remove the wisdom tooth is the right procedure, we’ll take X-rays to evaluate the teeth, bone, and gums.

Prior to your procedure, we’ll discuss the best anesthesia options for you, be sure you understand all aspects of the surgery, and review the post-op instructions.

There are pre-op items we will discuss with you to be sure you are prepared for the surgery. We’ll cover things like food prior to coming in, what time to arrive, ensuring you arrange for transportation, and understanding your medications. On the day of the procedure, you should have everything in place so you can focus on yourself during and after the operation.

Following your wisdom tooth removal, we will provide you with a set of post-op instructions. These will let you know what to expect, how to address the normal post-op conditions such as some bleeding, swelling or bruising, and pain management. We’ll also provide guidance on food and beverages as well as oral hygiene instruction for the healing process.

Of course, if you have any questions about your wisdom tooth surgery, you can call to talk with us.
